If living is an art, sharing your life with someone is the utmost expression of this art. Love may seem serendipitous but the truth is that it is the unique, voluntary and responsible act of creation of two human beings brought together by the magnificence of this energy. This book presents Sinay's lucid and sensitive exploration of the most subtle and most profound aspects of love. Diving into everyday living, Sinay proposes concrete tasks that lead to the consolidation of the couple, to the art of living in a relationship.
The First Transcontinental Railroad (known originally as the "Pacific Railroad" and later as the "Overland Route") was a railroad line built in the United States of America between 1863 and 1869 by the Central Pacific Railroad of California and the Union Pacific Railroad that connected its statutory Eastern terminus at Council Bluffs, Iowa/Omaha, Nebraska (via Ogden, Utah, and Sacramento, California) with the Pacific Ocean at Oakland, California on the eastern shore of San Francisco Bay opposite San Francisco. By linking with the existing railway network of the Eastern United States, the road thus connected the Atlantic and Pacific coasts of the United States by rail for the first time. The construction and operation of the line was authorized by the Pacific Railroad Acts of 1862 and 1864 during the American Civil War. Congress supported it with 30-year U.S. government bonds and extensive land grants of government-owned land. Completion of the railroad was the culmination of a decades-long movement to build such a line. It was one of the crowning achievements in the crossing of plains and high mountains westward by the Union Pacific and eastward by the Central Pacific. Opened for through traffic on May 10, 1869, with the driving of the "Last Spike" at Promontory Summit, Utah, the road established a mechanized transcontinental transportation network that revolutionized the population and economy of the American West. The Pacific Railroad constituted one of the most significant and ambitious American technological feats of the 19th century following in the footsteps of the building of the Erie Canal in the 1820s and the crossing of the Isthmus of Panama by the Panama Railroad in 1855 and this book is the pictorial story of this amazing feat and the individuals and driving forces behind it.
Quanta vita, quante vite. Buona caccia, Bastardi.
Part adventure story, part leadership guide, this intriguing book examines Shackleton's legendary Antarctic expedition through the lens of business--to reveal a set of powerful strategies for corporate leaders. In the chronicles of extraordinary adventures and against-the-odds survival, nothing compares to the story of Sir Ernest Shackleton and his team of South Pole explorers. Stranded in the frozen sea for nearly two years, they endured extreme temperatures, hazardous ice, dwindling food, complete isolation, and perpetual blackness. Yet, despite the seemingly insurmountable obstacles, the group remained cohesive, congenial, and mercifully alive--a fact that speaks not just to luck but to an unparalleled feat in leadership. Now, for the first time ever, Leading at the Edge draws on this amazing story to reveal the power of effective organizational leadership under conditions of uncertainty, ambiguity, and rapid change. The book uncovers 10 ons-- complete with stirring examples from the Shackleton expedition, as well as contemporary business case studies of the strategies in action--on what it takes to be a great leader. Readers learn how to: • Set a personal example with vivid symbols and behaviors • Instill optimism while staying grounded in reality • Reinforce the team message constantly • Find something to celebrate and something to laugh about • Have the courage to take big risks, and more. Did you drink a glass of matter today? Do you carry your matter to school with you? What kind of matter do you like on your pizza? You probably don't think twice about the items you use on a regular basis, but all the stuff in the universe - from a tiny speck of dust on the floor to the stars far, far away in our galaxy - is made of matter. Well-known science writers Alvin and Virginia Silverstein and Laura Silverstein Nunn explain what is inside matter, how it forms different states, how it is defined with the elements of the modern periodic table, and how chemical reactions take place. The authors also reveal current research on matter, showing how scientists are finding ways to use substances - even garbage - to create brand new resources and substitutes for items with limited supplies.
