In a play full of suspense, horror, and humor, Britain's distinguished dramatist presents the possible fate of Britain had she lost the war. As Mr. Coward says in his introduction, there have been other plays about occupied countries, but "The one thing, however, that differentiates it from other works on the same theme is the fact that the occupied country in question happens to be England, which has been neither invaded nor occupied by an enemy nation for eight hundred years." Around this provocative idea Mr. Coward has created a taut drama of a defeat which might have occurred and a deeply felt characterization of a people whose spirit and courage can never be shaken. This is completely satisfying drama, projecting the spirit of England through a selected group of characters.
