It is October, 1942, almost at the climax and turning point of the North African desert war against Rommel. RAF Spitfire pilot Nigel Turner has been forced to leave flying status after a wound. Now married to his beautiful wife Kathy (a former WAAF radar plotter), Nigel is sent with her to Cairo where as an intelligence officer he keeps an eye on pro-Nazi elements. His duties take into the Libyan desert to work with the tribes behind German lines. Back in Cairo, Kathy has her own brave part to play. Read on...
Situated in education policy analysis, this book is at the cutting edge of major debates across the social sciences regarding the nature of science, qualitative/quantitative tensions, post-foundational possibilities, and the research/policy nexus. Located between the aftermath of poststructuralism and the new scientism afoot in neoliberal audit culture, the book posits an engaged social science that is accountable to complexity and the political value of not being so sure. Its insistence is to put deconstruction to work in the midst of messiness, contingency, and ambiguity. The book will be useful in courses on education, feminist policy analysis, and qualitative research across disciplines.
Saint Irenaeus was the first great Christian theologian. Born in Asia Minor in about 130 A.
D., he became Bishop of Lyons and died as a martyr early in the third century. His main work, Adversus Haereses (Against the Heresies), is as relevant today as it was eighteen hundred years ago. It is a critique of Gnosticism, the 'anti-body' heresy, which, far from dying out, continues to flourish as the main threat to the Christian faith in our own day. With serenity and good humor, Irenaeus unfolds the unity of God's purpose in creation and redemption, in Old and New Testaments.
The flesh and blood which Gnosticism so despised has been assumed by God in the womb of the Virgin Mary, and glorified in the Resurrection and the Eucharist.
Thousands of years ago, the Skröm split off from the Light Clans and became Dark. Their greed for blood consumed them. Their once orange eyes bled to red, and they became one of the demons of legend. And when they die, they do not rest. They haunt. They take. They devour. Their souls become Shadows. Darkness. Death. Alexia Maria Garda-Martinez was born a monster. Red hair. Red eyes. Pale skin. And nowhere to call home. But after years of foster care and state homes, she has finally found her niche. A family. A promising career. And a life that’s fulfilling. Devon Waters ran from his hometown of Montville, New York fifteen years ago, and he found more than he bargained for. Reunited with his twin brother, a detective in the local police department, Devon doesn’t plan on running again. When a brutal, ritualistic murder happens right in their little college town, Alexia and Devon are pulled into a world of good versus evil that will have them both questioning who they are. The Skröm and the Shadows are closing in, and Alexia and Devon must join forces to stop the darkness at all costs. Will Alexia be able to fight her darker instincts, or will the devil inside of her draw her into its seductive web? This new study of American poetry views the poetics of Ezra Pound and his avant-garde followers in an entirely new light. Both Romanticism and Modernism have variously been seen as revolutionary or retrograde, narcissistic or self-abnegating. This interdisciplinary work looks past distinctions between schools and styles to reveal an unexpected link between poets' spiritual aspirations, formal experiments, and political convictions. Along the way, it sheds light on the complex relationship between art and society. Beginning with a fresh reading of Emerson's elusive philosophy, the author identifies the tension between Romanticism and Liberalism as a source of Modernist poetics. Critics have dissected the eccentric forms of avant-garde American poetry but have never adequately explained its scrupulous avoidance of abstraction and elimination of the poet from the poem.
Drawing extensively on classic and contemporary theory, this book reveals postwar poetics, particularly the epics Paterson and The Maximus Poems, as the fulfillment of a longstanding Romantic social vision, one which seeks to invest Liberal social structures with a transcendental core. This book is a valuable source for scholars with an interest in Emerson and Pound Studies, the intellectual traditions leading to Modernism, and the Objectivist and Black Mountain schools of American poetry.
